Alpinum

The Munich Alpinum is one of the most species-rich plants in Germany. Over 2,000 species of alpine and Mediterranean plants are presented here in near-natural arrangements.

The collection is arranged according to geographical aspects and allows a direct comparison of different mountain floras. The main flowering period is in the months of May and June.

Basic requirements for the cultivation of mountain plants are good drainage and sufficient exposure to sun and wind. What many alpine species lack in Munich are the nightly temperature drops in summer and the permanent snow cover in winter. In some cases, the winter snow cover can be simulated by covering spruce brushwood. Nevertheless, the culture of some mountain plants does not succeed under lowland conditions. The culture possibilities in the Alpine Garden on the Schachen as well as in the Alpine House are a valuable addition. In its entirety, the Munich Alpine collection is unique in Germany in terms of species number and quality.
