Arctic

A hidden, cool-shaded area near the western border of the Botanical Garden is considered an insider’s tip by garden visitors. Traditionally, the area is referred to as the “Arctic” on the garden’s site plans.
There is a small pond there that was created in 1914, but had leaked over time. In late summer 2019, the old pond was dredged and rebuilt in numerous stages.
The new pond has a depth of up to 1.30 m to keep the water as cool as possible. It is fed with water from one of our rainwater cisterns. It was built by a three-person team of our Arboretum gardeners, including an expert pond builder and landscaper experienced in stone work. The newly designed area was opened on July 23, 2020.
