From Artichokes to Lemongrass – Exotic Crops in Bavaria’s Fields

Harvest Festival: Special Exhibition in cooperation with TAGWERK Förderverein e.V.

Most of our cultivated plants originate from wild varieties native to regions outside of Germany. A major turning point was the colonisation of the Americas, which led to the introduction of a wide variety of new species to Central Europe, including tomatoes, potatoes, maize, tobacco, and pumpkins.

Resilient varieties and exotic species

Agriculture in Bavaria is currently facing another profound transformation. Climate change is driving a preference for cultivating more resilient varieties of common crops. At the same time, exotic crops that would not have yielded successful harvests just a few years ago can now be found in Bavarian fields. These include artichokes, chia, ginger, chickpeas, soy, lemongrass, and many more.

The history of how these “exotics” were introduced is the central theme of this year’s Harvest Festival exhibition. In addition, the traditional harvest of well-known fruits—from apples, quinces, and pears to various types of grain—will also be on display.

Activity Day on 3 October

A special highlight is the interactive Activity Day on 3 October, featuring a range of activities for the whole family.
Visitors can find out more about some of the new cultivated plants and their uses. Tasty recipes will be showcased at tasting stations. Using a hand-operated press and a bit of muscle power, you can make fresh apple juice to refresh yourself. Anyone who has their own apple tree can bring an apple along and have the variety identified by expert pomologists.

Admission

You will find the exhibition in the Winterhalle (Winter Hall), directly at the main entrance.
