Special Exhibition: Tropical Butterflies
Free flying butterflies
Every year in the winter months, the Botanical Garden Munich-Nymphenburg offers a special opportunity to experience tropical butterflies up close in the aquatic plant house of the greenhouses. The chrysalids come from special butterfly farms in Costa Rica and the Philippines. Just a few days after their arrival in the warm and humid climate of the greenhouse, they hatch and fly freely in the aquatic plant house. With a bit of luck, you can observe mating, egg laying, caterpillar stages and pupation on site. In this way, the entire life cycle of the butterflies can be experienced.

Admission with time slot tickets only
The butterfly exhibition is located in the large greenhouse complex, in the aquatic plant house (House 4). Space there is very limited. For this reason, only time slot tickets are available during the butterfly exhibition. The outdoor area is free of charge during the winter months.
Pushchairs cannot be taken into the greenhouses due to safety regulations. You can park your pushchairs here:
- in the basement of the main ticket office building

► How does the time slot ticket work?
| Short Information • The time slot ticket is valid as a day ticket for the show greenhouses from 9 am. to 4 pm. (last admission: 3:30 pm) • The booked time slot only regulates the admission time to the butterfly exhibition (House 4 of the show greenhouses, see map below). Your stay with at the butterfly exhibition is not limited. With your ticket, you can visit all other greenhouse areas from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. – before and after your visit to the butterflies. • Children aged 4 to 11 require a free time slot ticket. • Children under the age of 4 can be taken to the butterfly exhibition without a ticket. • Visitors with an annual pass are admitted to the greenhouses from 9 am to 3:30 pm. You will need a free time slot for the butterfly exhibition. Please use our online ticket shop to secure a time slot. The number of slots is limited. • On weekends and during holidays, tickets are usually sold out by around 12 noon. • Advice: If there is a wait before you can enter the butterfly house, you can spend the time in the other greenhouse areas, outdoors or in the café. |
Where can I get time slot tickets?
At the main ticket office: We offer a fixed number of time slot tickets every day.
These tickets are only valid on the same day. The tickets are available from the first day of the exhibition.
Online ticket shop: You can book your time slot in advance. Tickets will be available from 1 December 2025.

The greenhouses
The greenhouses consist of three central halls, from which 11 smaller greenhouses and the Green Room branch off. Our greenhouse map will help you find your way around.
Entrance
Daily from 9 am to 4 pm.
Last admission to the greenhouses 3.30 pm.
The outdoor area is open free of charge until 4.30 pm. The south entrance closes at 4.15 pm.
The Botanical Garden is closed on 24 and 31 December.

Free Admission for children under 12 years.
Reduced Admission for adolescens from 12 to 17 years. Please have your valid proof ready on site.
