Insect Drawings from Nature – Martina Zwanziger
The focus of the artist Martina Zwanziger is her observations of insects in nature. To capture the often ephemeral moments of encounter, she always carries her camera on her excursions. Her garden is designed to attract as many insects as possible. What may appear wild and untidy to some is, in fact, a consciously crafted habitat for insects. She joyfully observes how quickly insects take advantage of the offers once the right conditions are met.
In her garden, she is able to make detailed observations and study entire life cycles. This life cycle – ranging from the egg laid on the host plant, through the caterpillar stage, to the pupal stage and finally to the emerged butterfly – recurs as a theme in her work. For her, it is a process of understanding through drawing.
Martina Zwanziger lives and works in Volkach at the Main river.
